It was reported that the US industry groups and politicians debated whether to restore Section 232 tariffs on imports from Canada since the new United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) will be effective on July 1.
Robert Lighthizer, the US Trade Representative, said that if aluminum imports from Canada rose, the US will reinstate the tariffs on Canada, which was exempted from Section 232 tariffs in 2019.
Also, Mark Duffy, CEO of the American Primary Aluminum Association, said that tariffs on Canadian aluminum imports must be restored to curb the rising imports.
However, Pat Toomey, Senator for Pennsylvania, said that the US manufacturing industry was seriously injured by the steel and aluminum tariffs. Compared to the past three years, there were more and more reductions in jobs that used steel and aluminum for production because they were facing higher costs.
