Atlanta-based Novelis, part of the Aditya Birla Group, has announced a €160/t price increase for all of its automotive aluminium sheet products in Europe. The price increase reflects the strong demand for the company’s automotive sheet products, which has resulted in a tight supply situation.
The increase in demand is primarily due to rising orders from the automotive industry, as manufacturers switch to lighter-weight aluminium in order to meet fuel efficiency and reduced emissions targets.
To meet this growing demand, Novelis is expanding its capacity for the production of aluminium sheet products by investing more than US$310m in expanding its automotive plants. In addition to established plants in Nachterstedt (Germany), and Sierre (Switzerland), the company has recently qualified its plant in G?ttingen, Germany, as a third location in Europe to serve the automotive market. As well as the expansion in Europe, the company also has automotive sheet expansions planned for Oswego (New York), and Changzhou (China), to meet global demand.
