The first shipment of raw material needed for the joint venture between Ma’aden, the Saudi Arabian Mining Co., and Alcoa is headed to the project’s construction site in Saudi Arabia.
Alcoa’s Bunbury Port facility in Western Australia sent 47,000 tonnes of alumina, a raw material needed to smelt aluminum, to the Ma’aden Alcoa project in Ras Al Khair.
The $10.8 billion project, announced in 2009, is expected to start production at its smelter and rolling mill in 2013. The project’s mine and refinery component are expected to start production in 2014.

Initially, the smelter and rolling mill is expected to product 740,000 metric tons of primary metal and the rolling mill will make 380,000 metric tones of food-grade can sheet and auto sheet.
