International aluminum giant Alcoa is becoming a minority stakeholder in Electronic Recyclers International, a Fresno-based recycler of electronic waste.
The terms of Alcoa's investment in ERI were not immediately disclosed, but the deal will put Alcoa's chief sustainability officer, Kevin Anton, on ERI's board of directors.
ERI is the largest U.S. recycler of waste materials from consumer electronics, handling more than 120 million pounds of waste at six locations across the U.S.
Alcoa's investment "will allow us to continue expanding and improving our operations while keeping pace with the ever-growing demand for sustainable solutions to electronic waste," said John Shegerian, ERI's chief executive.
Alcoa said it expects the use of aluminum in consumer electronics goods to grow in the coming years. "This partnership between our two companies enhances Alcoa's ability to deliver on its commitment to sustainability by increasing the recycling of consumer electronics and driving sustainable practices," Anton said.
