BEACHWOOD, Ohio -- As U.S. President Barack Obama and Chinese President Hu Jintao discuss trade and diplomatic issues in Washington this week, Aleris International, a Beachwood aluminum processing and recycling company, broke ground on its second plant in China.
The plant should open in Zhenjiang City next year with an annual capacity of about 250,000 metric tons. Aleris already has a smaller aluminum extrusions plant in Tianjin, China.
"This groundbreaking is a tangible demonstration of our commitment to serving customers in China," Aleris Chairman and Chief Executive Steven J. Demetriou said in a written statement. "We appreciate and value the collaboration with our partner, Dingsheng, and the support of Jiangsu Province and the City of Zhenjiang."
The plant will be a joint venture with Zhenjiang Dingsheng Aluminum Industries. Aleris will own 81 percent of Aleris Dingsheng Aluminum (Zhenjiang) Co.
Formed by the 2004 merger of Kentucky-based Commonwealth Aluminum and Texas-based IMCO Recycling, Aleris has 42 plants in the United States, Europe and Asia.
According to the Bloomberg News, China is the world's largest consumer of aluminum.
