Alcoa Inc the largest US aluminum producer said that a December 18 fire at its Fjardaal plant in Iceland has reduced production.

Mr Mike Belwood a spokesman said that there were no injuries and the New York based company has restored power to the smelter.

Mr Belwood said that the fire affected an electrical substation that powers the plant and didn’t damage the smelter’s equipment. The company doesn’t yet know by how much production will be curtailed or when the plant will operate at full capacity again.

Mr Belwood said that “It will take some time before we are back to full production. We are working to bring the smelter back.”

The plant can produce as much as 346,000 tonnes a year.
