3.7 million aluminum cans collected during October in Fayette County

Residents, students and employees of businesses in Fayette County collected more than 3.7 million aluminum cans together during the month of October for the U.S. Mayors' Cans for Cash recycling contest, according to a news release from the city of Lexington. The contest challenged communities nationwide to collect and recycle as many aluminum cans as possible during October.


Twenty-seven schools in the county, both public and private, participated. The schools collecting the most cans received cash prizes from Wise Recycling, Baker Iron and Metal, PHINIX and the Lexington government.


Motessori Middle School, Russell Cave Elementary and Rosa Parks Elementary received $1,000 as first place winners for their categories; Family Care Center, Meadowthorpe Elementary and Bryan Station Middle School received $800 for second place achievements; and Lexington Day Treatment Center, Ashland Elementary and Paul Laurence Dunbar High School received $600 for third place. Several other schools received certificates for their efforts.
