Novelis Inc., an Atlanta-based manufacturer of rolled aluminum products, has created a new executive position to develop the company's plan for global sustainability.
John Gardner, currently vice president for human resources in the company's European operation, will become vice president and chief sustainability officer on Jan. 1.
Novelis is one of the world's top recyclers of beverage cans. Beverage bottlers like Coca-Cola Enterprises Inc. are among the company's largest customers.
The new appointment shows the company's sustained commitment to an integrated plan for corporate responsibility in its global operations, Phil Martens, Novelis's president and chief operating officer, said in a news release.
Mr. Gardner, a 25-year veteran at Novelis, will relocate from Zurich, Switzerland, to the company's headquarters in Atlanta.
Novelis is a subsidiary of Hindalco Industries Ltd., a large aluminum and copper producer based in Mumbai, India.
