An aluminum products company that idled its Chesterfield County plant two years ago announced today it will resume limited operations in September with about 50 employees.
Aleris International Inc. shut down most operations at its rolling mill on Reymet Road early in 2008 because of the downturn in the North American construction market.
At the time, the company said it laid off about 82 people at the plant, which made aluminum coil for the building and construction industry. Only a small staff was expected to remain.
A spokeswoman for Aleris confirmed today that the company plans to employ about 50 people at the plant when operations resume. The spokeswoman declined to comment further on hiring plans or market conditions.
Aleris said in a news release today that the plant will operate one shift, and the restart "is intended to only provide capacity to other Aleris facilities to meet internal demand and support customer service levels."
Aleris is based in Beachwood, Ohio, a suburb of Cleveland. The Company operates 40 production facilities in North America, Europe, South America and Asia, and employs about 6,500 people.
