Aluminum spread all over 60th Street

An 18-wheeler, loaded with 15 tons of aluminum, lost control at the West Sixtieth Street at dawn on Wednesday.


The accident left no casualties as it happened early in the morning, except for electricity pylons that were damaged.


Aluminum covered the street, halting traffic. The remained of the truck completely blocked the road, keeping a long line of car stuck near the accident with no place to go. Eyewitnesses said that they heard a huge explosion at dawn and rushed to the scene.


The 18-wheeler was coming from Harad area, the borderline with Saudi Arabia, along Sixtieth Street when its cabin was separated from the body due to some small potholes that caused the truck to turn over.


"We have not completed the investigation yet, but it seems that the accident was caused by excess speed," said Colonel Nadim al-Terzi, the director of the traffic in the secretariat, Sana'a.


The driver was taken to the hospital and had an immediate operation. "The driver had seven broken ribs, some fractures in the spine, and a broken collar bone," said Dr. Majid Amer, the Orthopedic Surgery who made the operation to the driver.


"The accident was due to speed bumps," Dr. Amer added quoting the driver as saying.


The 18-wheeler is said to be owned by a Saudi citizen and a Yemeni trader. It was heading to Taiz province when the accident took place.
