In a move that could escalate trade disputes between the two countries, the US has decided to initiate antidumping and countervailing duty probe on aluminum extrusions imported from China.
The US Commerce Department said in a statement the petitioners for the probe are the United Steel Union and the Aluminum Extrusions Fair Trade Committee.
The merchandise covered by the investigation is certain aluminum extrusions, which are shapes and forms produced via an extrusion process of aluminum alloys, Xinhua reported Wednesday.
From 2007 to 2009, imports of aluminum extrusions from China increased 90 percent by volume. And in 2009, imports of aluminum extrusions valued $514 million, according to the US government.
The US International Trade Commission （ITC） is scheduled to make its preliminary injury determination in May 2010.
If the ITC determines that there is a reasonable indication that imports from China are injuring or threatening material injury to the domestic industry, the investigation will continue, and Commerce Department will be scheduled to make its countervailing preliminary determination in June and its antidumping determination in September.
