NEW YORK, March 18 (Reuters) - The annual rate of primary U.S. aluminum production fell 12.8 percent to 1,697,850 tonnes in February from 1,947,158 tonnes in February 2009, but gained 1.8 percent from January's annual rate of 1,668,262 tonnes, the Aluminum Association said on Thursday.
For the first two months, the annual production rate slid 20.5 percent to 1,682,304 tonnes from a 2009 year-to-date annual production rate of 2,155,825 tonnes.
Actual production for February came to 130,246 tonnes, down from 149,371 tonnes in February 2009, and from 141,688 tonnes produced in January, the association said.
Actual production for the year through February slid to 271,934 tonnes from 342,010 tonnes in the year-ago period, the association said.
February's average daily production dropped to 4,652 tonnes from 5,335 tonnes in February 2009, but was up from 4,571 average tonnes produced in January, the aluminum group added.
It also said average daily production tumbled to 4,609 tonnes in the first two months from 5,797 tonnes in the comparable 2009 period.
The association said companies participating in the survey account for 100 percent of U.S. primary aluminum production.
