Mining giant Rio Tinto Ltd. (RTP) said Wednesday it achieved record iron ore production in the third quarter as its expansion program boosted capacity.
Rio, which is the world's second biggest producer of iron ore, produced 35.74 million metric tons of iron ore for the quarter, up 11% on the previous corresponding period.
The miner said that, despite continued recovery from the impact of cyclones earlier in the year, its Hamersley iron ore production was 14% higher than in the previous corresponding period as new capacity came on from the Yandicoogina and Nammuldi mines.
The amount of copper mined during the quarter fell 6% to 182,800 metric tons due to strikes at the Escondida operations in Chile and lower grades at the Grasberg mine in Indonesia.
