Dubai, United Arab Emirates: Reflecting the corporate culture of continuous improvement and benchmarking against the best in all areas of its business, Dubai Aluminium ("DUBAL") was named the Procurement Team of the Year at the inaugural Chartered Institute of Purchasing & Supply ("CIPS") Middle East Awards. Presented during the CIPS Middle East 2012 Conference, held at the Qatar National Convention Centre in Doha on 6 May, the CIPS Middle East Awards celebrate and reward excellence. With CIPS being a world recognised, independent professional body, the awards are reputed to represent the most prestigious recognition accorded to companies and/or individuals in the procurement and supply chain management profession.
Delighted at the accolade, Masood Taleb Al Ali (Vice President: Supply) says DUBAL that entered three categories in the CIPS Middle East 2012 Awards, namely 1) Procurement Team of the Year; 2) Most Improved Purchasing Operation; and 3) Best Contribution to the Reputation of the Procurement Profession. "Of the nine companies shortlisted for the first-ever CIPS Middle East Awards, only DUBAL was short-listed in three categories," he says. "We are extremely proud to have received three nominations; and to have won the main award category."
Al Ali adds that DUBAL's Supply Chain team prides itself on developing long-term relationships with all suppliers, thereby position the company as a customer of choice. "Our single-minded mission is to support DUBAL's strategic plans by ensuring continuity between the various functions within the operational and administrative areas of our business; and maintaining sufficient stock to meet demand and protect production at all times," he says. "At the same time, we consciously support DUBAL's Corporate Social Responsibility ambitions by implementing and maintaining Green Supply Chain principles."
With a hot metal production capacity in excess of one million metric tonnes per year, DUBAL's Jebel Ali complex ranks as the world's largest single-site primary aluminium smelter using pre-baked anode technology. DUBAL is internationally renowned for its premium purity, high quality products; and exports more than 90 per cent of its annual production to about 50 countries across the globe. The company, which is widely acknowledged as the UAE's industrial flagship, places the safety and health of its employees above other priorities.
DUBAL also owns 50 per cent of Emirates Aluminium ("EMAL") in Al Taweelah, Abu Dhabi, where the first phase of construction is complete and the full 740,000 metric tonnes per year production capacity has been commissioned. Construction of EMAL Phase II, which will increase EMAL's total production capacity to 1.3 million metric tonnes per year, began mid-2011. In terms of a formal agreement, DUBAL is also responsible for procuring the strategic raw materials used by EMAL. In addition, DUBAL holds shares in upstream development projects, with a view to securing a portion of its alumina requirements.
