Dr. Hilal bin Abdullah al Hinai, General Manager of Human Resources and Corporate Affairs at Sohar Aluminum Company said in a statement to Oman News Agency (ONA) that Sohar Aluminum Company will celebrate next Saturday completing 1 million ton of Aluminum from the smelter, which started production in June 2008.
"Reaching the benchmark of 1 million ton of production is a great achievement that reflects the success of the company in integrating the aluminum industry in the Sultanate, especially it is the first aluminum smelter in the Sultanate," he added.
"The production capacity of the smelter is 375,000 metric ton of aluminum per year. The company is committed to provide 60% of the production to the local market including the two companies of electric cables and aluminum rolling mill. The remainder of the production goes to the Asian, European and US markets," he continued
Dr. al Hinai pointed out that after the expansion, the production capacity of the plant will be doubled to reach between 750,000 to 800,000 metric ton of aluminum.
He also pointed out that Sohar Aluminum smelter is a joint venture between Oman Oil Company, Taqah Company of UAE and Alcan of Canada. Sohar Aluminum Company also owns a facility in Sohar Industrial Port, which is fully equipped to receive vessels with a capacity of 75,000 tons for the import of raw materials and export of raw aluminum. The company also owns the longest single smelter line in the world (1.2 km).
Dr. Hilal bin Abdullah al Hinai also said that the smelter is the first of its kind in the world that uses the unique smelting technology developed by Rio Tinto Alcan, one of the best smelting technologies currently available for commercial use. The technology saves power and increases production by using an operational current equals to 360 KA.
He added that the development of human resources receives great interest by the company, which considers the human resources as real assets for the company. The number of workers at the company now stands at 1003 including 773 Omanis, 440 of them from the Wilayats of Sohar and Liwa. The Omanization rate in the company has now reached more than 70%, occupying different career levels at the company.
Dr. al Hinai affirmed that the investment of Sohar Aluminum Company is not limited to smelting aluminum and power generation, but rather includes social investment in the development of local communities in general and the wilayats of the Al Batinah Region in particular. He added that the company allocates 1.5% of its profits for the social responsibility and community service programmes.
"The company has also invested huge amounts in preserving environment by limiting the CO2 emissions," he concluded.
