RUSAL, a global leading aluminum supplier in Russia, said last Friday that it has put its long-idled Taishet aluminum smelter in Siberia into operation, due to the continuous growing demand for the low-carbon metal used in car, packaging, and construction fields.
The construction of the Taishet aluminum smelter was started in 2007. This project was stalled in 2009 due to weak aluminum prices and restarted in 2017 as aluminum prices rebounded, while a string of other delays followed.
RUSAL said this smelter has completed the construction of infrastructure and the first stage, with a total expense of US$1.7 billion, and the testing was started on Friday. The annual capacity of the Taishet smelter’s first stage will be 428,500 tons.
