It was reported that En+ Group said that its Rusal has successfully produced primary aluminum with the lowest carbon footprint aluminum field at Rusal’s Krasnoyarsk Aluminium Smelter (KrAZ). The purity of the aluminum produced exceeds 99% with CO2 equivalent per ton of metal of fewer than 0.01 tons.
En+ Group said that the daily production of this new electrolyzer is around 1 ton of aluminum at a current of 140,000 amperes.
The replacement of standard carbon anodes with inert non-consumable materials (ceramics or alloys) made a great reduction of emissions during the smelting process. The carbon footprint of using inert anodes to produce aluminum is 85% lower compared to the average emissions of the whole industry.
