United Co. Rusal (UC Rusal) will produce 324,733 fewer tonnes of aluminum this year vs. 2012, and will cut an additional 322,771 tonnes next year, it said.
The curtailments represent an 8-percent decline in production from 4.17 million tonnes in 2012.
The cuts are taking place at UC Rusal’s least efficient smelters, allowing the company to realize savings of $40 per tonne in production costs.
"(UC) Rusal continues to react to the current market conditions and may consider further actions to improve its cost position in the industry," Vladislav Soloviev, first deputy chief executive officer, said in a statement.
As of Oct. 17, aluminum production has been mothballed at the company’s Volgograd, Urals and Volkhov smelters, as well as at the first phase of the Novokuznetsk smelter in Russia and at the Alscon smelter in Nigeria, UC Rusal said in an update on its volume reduction program.
Cuts have also been made in potroom capacity at the Bogoslovsk and Nadvoitsy smelters, it added.
Production volumes at the Sayanogorsk, Irkutsk, Novokuznetsk and Khakass smelters in Russia have also fallen due to reduced power supplies to those facilities.
The Moscow-based company has also delayed the commissioning of the Boguchansky smelter until the middle of next year.
