UC RUSAL (SEHK: 486, Euronext: RUSAL/RUAL, MICEX-RTS: RUALR), the world’s largest aluminium producer, congratulates its Chairman Mr Barry Cheung for a successful campaign which helped Mr Leung Chun-ying (“CY Leung”) win the office of Hong Kong’s fourth Chief Executive in yesterday’s election. Mr Leung’s five-year term will begin on July 1, 2012.
Mr Leung’s winning was the culmination of a long and active campaign supported by a highly professional campaign office headed by Mr Cheung. Mr Leung, who took 58% of the votes on Sunday, promised after his victory that he would defend Hong Kong’s core values and address the city’s most pressing problems such as housing and education.
As Hong Kong’s next Chief Executive, Mr Leung will also further develop Hong Kong’s unique position as a global financial centre, and enhance the strategic commercial and cultural links between China and the rest of the world, including Russia.
Speaking on the winning election campaign, Mr Cheung said, “It’s a great honour to have the opportunity to work with such a dedicated and passionate campaign team. I am particularly pleased to have played a part in this successful election campaign which marks another important milestone in Hong Kong’s political development.
“Moving forward as Chairman of UC RUSAL, I will continue to contribute my expertise and experience to lead the further development of the company while strengthening the business ties between Russia, Hong Kong and China,” he added.
