Rusal has offered its expert support to help tackle the crisis followingthe toxic sludge spill at Magyar Aluminium's facility near the Hungarian townof Ajka, the Russian aluminium producer said Wednesday.
"Rusal has several R&D institutes that specialize in designing red mudstorage," the company said in a statement. Rusal "is ready to contribute to the accident inquiry and remediation efforts by providing the company's specialists in different fields, including engineers engaged in designing red mud ponds and other hydro technicalstorage, as well as experts in maintenance of red mud ponds and storage," it added.
The villages of Devecser and Kolontar were hardest hit when a reservoirof chemical residue burst on October 4 at a MAL alumina plant at Ajka, 160 km(100 miles) west of Budapest.
"We believe that every aluminium producer in the world should help alleviate the disaster in Hungary," said Rusal CEO Oleg Deripaska in thestatement. "I think it is time for the whole industry to come together and develop new safeguards which, when used throughout the industry, will be ableto prevent similar tragedies in the future." Hungarian lawmakers voted Tuesday to nationalize MAL, with a view toinstalling a government representative at the head of the company.
