UC RUSAL, the new aluminium giant created by the merger of Russia’s RusAl and SUAL and the aluminium interests of Swiss trade house Glencore, said it has begun construction on the new 600,000tpy Boguchansk aluminium smelter in the Siberian region of Krasnoyarsk.
The smelter is part of an integrated energy-aluminium project which includes the construction of a 3000MW hydro-power plant on the Angara River. UC RUSAL is partnering with energy company Hydro OGK on the project.
Total investment is expected to reach $2.3 billion with the smelter due to be commissioned in December 2009 with full production slated for Q2 2011.
