Russian aluminum producer United Company Rusal is "closely watching" the $26.9 billion hostile bid for Canada's Alcan Inc. (AL) by U.S. giant Alcoa Inc. (AA), a company spokeswoman told Dow Jones Newswires Tuesday.
"We will be closely watching the situation regarding Alcoa's intention to acquire Alcan," said UC Rusal spokeswoman Vera Kurochkina. "It is encouraging to see that the creation of UC Rusal prompted our peers to take such powerful action to further consolidate the industry," she added.
UC Rusal was founded in March through the merger of Russian producers Rusal and Sual and the alumina assets of Glencore International AG.
"As for UC Rusal, we are focusing on developing as an energy and metals corporation, maintaining our growth dynamics and looking for further opportunities to diversify our business," Kurochkina said.
Alcoa's bid for that Alcan would, if successful, create the world's largest aluminum company by output.
