KOLKATA--Russian aluminum maker UC Rusal Monday declined comment on its plans to set up an alumina smelting plant in India, saying it is "premature to talk about any specific project." "Any business implies continuous investigation of new opportunities and India is an interesting region for UC Rusal," company spokeswoman Vera Kurochkina said in an e-mailed statement to a Dow Jones Newswires' query.
India's Economic Times newspaper Monday reported that Rusal was in preliminary talks with diversified Essar Group (ESG.YY) to set up one-million-metric-tons-a-year alumina smelting plant in the eastern state of Orissa with an investment of $1 billion.
An Essar group spokesman had confirmed such talks between the two companies, the newspaper report added.
