MOSCOW--United Company Rusal, the world's largest producer of primary aluminum, has no plans to invest in a new smelter in Indonesia, the company said Wednesday.
Bisnis Indonesia, published earlier Wednesday, had reported that the company is considering a 26 trillion rupiah ($2.8 billion) project to build a complex including a smelter and hydropower plant in west Java.
"We do not plan the construction of (an) aluminum smelter and hydropower plant on the island of Java," a spokeswoman said in an emailed statement.
UC Rusal formally completed its merger Tuesday, bringing together the assets of Russia's OAO Rusal and Sual Group and the alumina operations of Swiss-based trader Glencore AG.
