Rusal has launched the first starter complex of its Khakas aluminium smelter, the Russian producer said Friday. The planned capacity of the smelter is 300,000 mt/year, which will increase Rusal's total primary aluminium production by 11%; the annual capacity of the first starter complex is 71,000 mt.
The total completion of the $750 million smelter project, located in the Republic of Khakasia, is planned for November 2007, the company said.
"KhAZ is the first aluminium smelter built by the company's own engineering and construction division and based on its proprietary technology," said Alexander Bulygin, CEO of Rusal, in a statement.
"This experience will be the base for Rusal to implement new projects including the construction of smelters in Taishet, Boguchany and other regions," he added.
