Operations at OAO Rusal`s Friguia alumina refinery in Guinea have been disrupted by demonstrations in the nearby town of Fria in which police fired on protesters, injuring 14.
"Most workers are too scared to come to the refinery because of the rioters but also because of the police`s shooting," said Reuters, citing an employee of Rusal`s local management company, Alumina Co of Guinea Ltd (ACG).
The protests began on Monday to complain about the poor state of the road network around the town, and were further fueled by rumours that the police had killed a pregnant woman, said Reuters.
On Tuesday, the regional government said Rusal had agreed to pay for the roads to be resurfaced.
ACG is Guinea`s only refinery and has an output capacity of 700,000 t/y.
In April, Rusal agreed with the Guinean Government to acquire the Friguia bauxite and alumina complex and the remaining stake in ACG.
Rusal already held an 85% stake in ACG, acquired through its purchase of Guinean Investment Co Ltd in 2003.
ACG manages Friguia on the basis of a 25-year mining concession agreement with the government, ending in 2026. ACG also holds the off-take rights.
In addition to the refinery, Friguia also consists of a 2.8 Mt/y bauxite mine.
