Norwegian aluminum producer Norsk Hydro successfully produced the world’s first batch of aluminum using green hydrogen, realizing the company’s commitment to decarbonization.
Hydro replaced natural gas with carbon-free green hydrogen as an energy source, completing the test at the casthouse in its extrusion plant in Navarra, Spain.
The test was carried out by Hydro Havrand, Hydro's green hydrogen company, cooperating with Fives, an industrial engineering group engaged in hydrogen development.
The test proves that hydrogen can be used in aluminum production. In the process that electricity can’t be an alternative, green hydrogen can remove hard-to-reduce emissions from fossil fuels in the aluminum industry and other heavy industries, said Per Christian Eriksen, Head of Hydro Havrand.
