Aluminum Dunkerque, the biggest primary aluminum smelter in France, has started production resumption which was idled last year due to surged electricity costs, said a spokesperson this Wednesday (January 11).
Due to reduced electricity prices in France and government support for energy-intensive industries, this smelter was able to resume production.
The production at this smelter was cut by approximately 20% in the fourth quarter of last year, and the full operation was expected to be in May this year.
Continued rising energy costs have severely impacted the power-hungry aluminum industry. European aluminum production has dropped to its lowest since the 1970s.
