According to the International Aluminium Institute, world alumina production in March 2021 stood at 5.725 million tonnes, bringing the total output to 16.639 million tonnes in the first quarter of 2021. The production in March reflected a hike of 10.37 per cent month-on-month from 5.187 million tonnes and 4.97 per cent on the year from 5.454 million tonnes.
IAI data showed world alumina production in Q1 2021 stood 3.57 per cent higher than 16.065 million tonnes during the same period last year. But on a quarter-on-quarter calculation, the production stood down by 1.05 per cent from 16.815 million tonnes.
Chine, being the largest alumina producer in the world, churned out 3.310 million tonnes in March 2021, up by 10.30 per cent month-on-month. In February, China’s production was at 3.001 million tonnes, however, down by 9.61 per cent from 3.320 million tonnes in January. China’s total alumina production in the March quarter amounted to 9.631 million tonnes, up by 6.40 per cent from 9.052 million tonnes during the same period last year.
In the GCC countries, alumina production in March 2021 stood at 497,000 tonnes, bringing the total output to 1.445 million tonnes in Q1 2021 compared to 1.470 million tonnes in Q1 2020. The output in March 2021 stood 2,000 tonnes lower than 499,000 tonnes in March 2020 but up by 9.47 per cent from 454,000 tonnes in February 2021.
In Asia (ex-China), alumina output in Q1 2021 came in at 1.093 million tonnes, up by 5.50 per cent year-on-year from 1.036 million tonnes. In March 2021, Asia (ex-China) produced 378,000 tonnes of alumina, reflecting a month-on-month hike of 11.50 per cent than 339,000 tonnes and 8.93 per cent year-on-year than 347,000 tonnes.
In the Oceania region, alumina production in March 2021 stood at 162,000 tonnes, bringing the total output in Q1 2021 to 469,000 tonnes.
