France-based REEL International SAS says it has signed an agreement to acquire the aluminum production equipment business unit of Finland-based Metso Outotec Oyj.
The acquired business serves aluminum smelters globally, says REEL, “and has a leading position in the production of anodes required in the aluminum smelting process.” REEL, which describes itself as a maker of handling and lifting systems, says the transaction allows it to “add to its offering green anode plant, anode rod shop and casting equipment, along with related services, thus becoming a leading technology provider in the global aluminum industry.”
REEL says Metso Outotec’s Green Anode Plant and Anode Rodshop technologies “are featured in most of the world’s recent aluminum smelter expansions.” The equipment is sold into facilities in Germany, Canada, the United Arab Emirates, China, India and Australia, adds REEL.
Much of the business unit’s equipment is sold to the primary aluminum market, although sow and ingot casting machinery can be used by secondary producers, and it markets and makes a Carbon Scrap Recycling Plant for smelter operators.
“I am very pleased to welcome Metso Outotec’s aluminum business experts to the REEL family,” says Philippe Frantz, chair of REEL International. “We aim for strong growth by improving the way we serve our customers, and this transaction significantly strengthens our offering and presence among global aluminum producers”
“REEL International is an excellent new home for our aluminum technologies and experts,” says Jari ?lgars, president of Metso Outotec’s Metal Business Area. “I am confident that the addition of Metso Outotec’s aluminum expertise to REEL’s leading offering will benefit aluminum producers globally in the form of new innovations, solutions and services.”
Comments Cedric Schmuck, aluminum division director at REEL International, “We will now focus on integrating the teams and forming a new strategy to leverage the best of both parties for the benefit of our customers. I see great potential for us to play a role in the improvement of environmental footprint and reduction of emissions of the global aluminum industry.”
