The Star reported that residents in Sri Cheeding near here are up in arms against an aluminium smelting factory that they allege is discharging toxic fumes. Some 200 residents from Kampung Sri Cheeding, Taman Sentosa and Taman Sri Cheeding have also signed a petition demanding the factory is removed from the area.
Ms Sakeenah Omar, who lives near the factory, said the area is often dense with metallic-smelling smog during the night which lingers on until the wee hours of the morning. He said that "Initially, we did not know that the smell was coming from the factory as we could not see anything coming out of its chimneys.”
However, she added, it was discovered by chance that the factory was carrying out its smelting activities at night and that was why the smoke emissions were not detected during the day.
She added that "I was driving around late one night looking for the source of the foul smell when I saw smoke from the factory.”
Kuala Langat Environmental Action Association secretary Ms Pua Lay Peng said her association had sent in written complaints several times to the Selangor Environmental Department since late last year. Ms Pua said that "The factory melts scrap aluminium at high temperatures and this releases toxic fumes into the environment,"
She said factories conducting smelting should be located in heavy industry areas and not in the middle of residential areas.
