Global primary aluminum output surged 2.6% month on month in May, International Aluminium Institute (IAI) data showed.
Total global production in May stood at 5.44 million mt, up from 5.3 million mt in April. The figure was marginally higher year-on-year.
Production on a daily basis was slightly down month-on-month at 175,500 mt.
For the January-May period, world production was down less than 1% year-on-year at 26.43 million mt from 26.6 million a year before.
Chinese primary aluminum production in May rose 2.8% month-on-month but was down 1.4% year-on-year. For the period January-May, China produced 14.88 million mt of primary aluminum, down 2.7% on year.
Production within Europe and North America saw a rise of 3.6% and 3.2% month-on-month at 660,000 mt and 321,000 mt respectively in May.
In Asia ex-China, May data showed that primary production rebounded by 4.5% month-on-month at 371,000 mt from a 6% drop in April. The figure was also 16% higher from a year before.
In Middle East aluminum production followed the uptrend and also increased by 2.7% on month at 458,000 mt from 446,000 mt in April. That would also mark a 6.8% rise year-on-year.
