The North American net new aluminum mill order index increased 1.2% in May compared with April, according to a report released Wednesday by the Aluminum Association.
New mill orders decreased 6.3% compared with May 2012's total. Year-to-date, the index is down 4.3%, the report said.
May plate orders decreased 7% from April, and were down 5.9% compared with May 2012 levels.
May sheet orders were down 2.5% compared with April and declined 10.6% on the year-ago period.
May orders of extruded products were down 4.7% from April and down 5.4% from the same month in 2012.
May orders of foil increased 14% compared with the previous month, but were down 12.6% from a year earlier.
Orders of domestic can stock increased 4.8% from April but were down 5.2% from May 2012. May orders of export can stock rose 8.5% from April, and were up 18.4% from a year earlier.
The index is based on reports of new orders, less cancellations, received by 24 participants for the previous month.
