Outotec to conduct feasibility study for the first alumina refinery to be builtin Indonesia.
Outotec has agreed with PT ANTAM (Persero) Tbk (ASX: ATM; IDX: ANTM; Antam),Indonesia's leading diversified mining and metals company, to carry out afeasibility study for the very first smelter-grade alumina refinery to be builtin Indonesia.
Indonesia is the sixth-largest bauxite producing country in the world.
Nevertheless, thus far the domestic bauxite is not refined to alumina - key rawmaterial in aluminum production - in Indonesia. Instead, alumina is importedfrom Australia to the aluminum smelter located in North Sumatra. Antam istherefore intending to build the first smelter grade alumina refinery inIndonesia, in order to utilize its vast bauxite deposits and develop anintegrated value chain for domestic aluminum production.
The feasibility study which will be conducted by Outotec will includecomprehensive mineralogical investigations, laboratory-scale hydrometallurgicaltests and basic engineering of the alumina refinery.
"We are extremely pleased that our expertise spanning the entire value chain --from ore to refined metal -- will be utilized in developing Indonesia's aluminumindustry. The feasibility study for the new alumina refinery will be based onOutotec? Alumina Refining technologies which are energy efficient andsustainable," says Outotec CEO Pertti Korhonen.
