Brazilian utility AES Eletropaulo has upgraded a transmission line that carries electricity through a congested portion of Sao Paulo, Brazil.
The utility used 3M Aluminum Conductor Composite Reinforced (ACCR) overhead conductor to more than double the transmission line's capacity without the need for larger towers or an expanded right of way, 3M explains.
According to 3M, AES deployed the lightweight, low-sag 3M ACCR to avoid construction, logistical and permitting problems in densely populated urban districts and environmentally sensitive areas, such as wetlands and river crossings. Because 3M's ACCR is based on aluminum, it is not as susceptible to environmental conditions such as moisture or UV exposure, and it has the corrosion resistance typically associated with aluminum-based conductors, 3M adds.
