About 2,000 pounds of molten aluminum spilled from a furnace early Wednesday morning at Hydro Aluminum in St. Augustine, according to a statement from the company.
St. Johns County Fire Rescue officials responded to the business in the 200 block of Riviera Boulevard, off U.S. 1, around 2:30 a.m. to contain the spill, said Jeremy Robshaw, public information officer for St. Johns County Fire Rescue.
"Employees of the facility had utilized multiple fire extinguishers in an attempt to cool the material, but due to the extreme heat, these efforts were unsuccessful," Robshaw said.
The molten aluminum, which was heated to around 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit, spilled from a furnace used to melt recycled aluminum, the statement said.
It burned several pieces of machinery, reinforced rubber hydraulic lines, hydraulic fluid and paint. St. Johns County Fire Rescue used water to cool the material and begin the clean-up, Robshaw said.
The spill caused about $30,000 in damage, according to the statement.
The facility should continue remelting aluminum in two or three days. The spill did not harm aluminum extrusion operations, the statement said.
Officials at Hydro Aluminum are investigating the cause of the spill, the statement said. No one was injured because of the spill.
