The world output of nickel in the calendar year (January to December) of 2010 came up to 1,430,200 tonnes, having increased by 8.5% compared with that in the preceding year of 2009.
This nickel output in 2010 included 745,200 tonnes produced in the western countries, which had a decrease of 1.4% compared to that in 2009. This decline of nickel production in the western world was due to the strike continued for a long period at the Sudbury Division of Vale, a major producer of nickel in Canada.
