President of Noranda Jamaica Bauxite Partners in Discovery Bay, St Ann, Pansy Johnson, says the company will increase its production by 20 per cent next year to some 5.1 million tonnes.
Johnson made the announcement over the weekend as the bauxite company honoured 97 staff members for their long and dedicated service.
The announcement means that the company will increase its production capacity for the second time in three years since it acquired Century Aluminium’s mining and operation’s interest in the former Kaiser Jamaica Bauxite Company in 2009.
Within one year after the acquisition, Noranda increased its shipping capacity from 3.1 million tonnes to 4.3 million tonnes.
Jamaica’s bauxite sector has been on the rebound recently as bauxite importing countries recover from the world financial crisis.
Just last month international aluminium producer, UC RUSAL, announced that the Windalco-Kirkvine Works Plant in Manchester is to be reopened on July 1.
Production at the bauxite facility was temporarily suspended in April 2009 due to what the management said were efforts to cut cost at the site.
