A dearth of aluminum units in Latin America is forcing Brazilian consumers to look as far north as the United States and Canada in their effort to meet the country's soaring demand, sources in the marketplace told AMM.
Traditionally a net exporter of the light metal, Brazil has recently found itself short metal, according to several North American suppliers who say they have started quoting material to ship to Brazil.
"Brazil is eating up everything. It's targeting from Canada and the U.S.," one domestic trader said. "They're pulling it from wherever they can get it."
A North American producer who said he had never before fielded calls from Brazilian consumers agreed that interest is on the rise. "We're gotten some calls from Brazil. Demand is definitely there," he said.
