WAYNESBORO, Pa. — Bleachers in Indian Stadium behind Waynesboro Area Senior High School will be replaced with aluminum materials because of a school board decision made this week.
The Waynesboro Area School Board voted unanimously Tuesday to spend approximately $135,000 to replace bleachers on both the home and visitors’ sides.
District officials have debated for several weeks whether to use wooden, composite or aluminum materials when replacing the wooden bleachers at the stadium.
Board member Pat Heefner said she looked at the bleachers in the daylight a few days ago and was “appalled.”
“It’s an accident waiting to happen,” she said.
Board member Leland Lemley cautioned against discussions about safety, saying those comments open the board to “substantial exposure because of some of the conversations we’ve had here.”
“There has been a substantial discussion that should’ve never occurred in this forum … about potential liability,” Lemley said.
Superintendent James Robertson said the district had been replacing about 60 boards a year for a total cost of $1,200.
“That did not address any of the decking,” he said.
Replacing everything with wood would cost $47,000, including paint or sealer, Robertson said. That replacement would’ve had a shorter life span, he said.
Robertson said he contacted a company about composite materials and was told they’re not typically designed for these types of projects.
The board talked briefly about using aluminum on the home side and wood on the visitors’ side, but later agreed to use aluminum for both.
The district plans to replace the bleachers in the early spring, Robertson said.
