Packaging recovery & recycling up, aluminium recovery down

The latest figures from the Environment Agency show a marked increase in the amounts of packaging being recovered and recycled in the second quarter of 2010 but aluminium recovery is down. Some reprocessors have yet to report their data but about 1.8 million tonnes of packaging was recovered or recycled. This represents a 7.5 per cent increase over the same period of 2009. The amount of glass recovered was up by a handy 18 per cent, to 472,912 tonnes. However, some 3,000 tonnes less aluminium was recovered compared to last year. That’s a drop of 20 per cent. The lower level of aluminium recovery is largely attributable to weaker global demand for commodities.

Tom Rickerby is senior market operator at the Environment Exchange (t2e), which trades in Packaging Recovery Notes. He says the production of packaging recovery notes had been affected by a volatile export market. According to Rickerby, falling commodity prices and lower demand from Asia has hit the figures for materials that are dependent on the export market. This includes paper and plastic, as well as aluminium. T2e says demand for aluminium remained strong over the last two months and suppliers were unwilling to sell packaging recovery notes (PRNs) at the current prices.

Gareth Goodall, director of markets at PRN-trading platform Scrap-ex, says the firm continued to see a record month, even amongst all the talk of lower trading levels. He says the figures only give a picture of the supply side of the market. Rick Hindley is executive director at Alupro, a non-profit organisation that represents many leading aluminium reprocessors. He said they’re not worried by the latest figures. He said the figures for 2009 included a big one-off reprocessing of beer barrels so it is unsurprising to see the figures for the second quarter of this year down on last year.
