May 12 (Reuters) - Labour unrest at mines and metal plantshas intensified and, while a blockade by workers of a largecopper mine in Chile has been lifted, the potential for moredisruptions looms in both copper and aluminium.
Subcontractors cleared access roads to Chile's Collahuasicopper mine to avoid clashes with police in a move that couldherald an end to a five-day protest that halted operations atone of the world's top deposits, two protest leaders said onTuesday. [ID:nN11272496]
But this did not mean the protest was over, another unionleader said and there are fears that the action may spread. In addition, the contract at Xstrata's (XTA.L) CCR copperrefinery in Montreal, Canada is set to run out at the end ofthis month.
The plant suffered a strike in 2007. In aluminium, a strike was averted on Wednesday at NorskHydro's four aluminium smelters in Norway. [ID:nLDE64B0CD] But a major contract expires at the end of May at majoraluminium producer Alcoa's (AA.N) U.S. operations.
