Konya-based Eti Alüminyum, which focuses on producing and selling bauxite, aluminum hydroxide, aluminum oxide, primary aluminum and rolled products, has invested nearly $190 million over the last five years.
The company has been through several personnel, technical and cost-related restructurings over that same period, according to general coordinator Cemil Tiryakioğlu.
There are 1,100 people employed at the factory, he said, adding that a private-sector company cannot operate in the same way as a state-controlled company because earning money is important for the private sector.
“For three years, we have operated at full capacity. But then last year, due to the economic crisis, our capacity was cut down,” Tiryakioğlu said. “Our capacity in electrolysis contracted to 40 percent while in aluminum it deteriorated to 35 percent. However, this year brings new hopes. We have increased our capacity once again.”
In the last five years, the company has invested nearly $190 million for renovations and modernizations in every department, said Tiryakioğlu.
Noting that Eti Alüminyum is working with a Nordic firm, he said studies are ongoing in dry gas cleaning. The company has also made an agreement with the Canadian firm Hydrogen Engine Center, or HEC, for 280 million Canadian dollars to improve the aluminum’s quality.
Eti Alüminyum has a production capacity of 60,000 tons of aluminum, said Tiryakioğlu, adding that the factory’s annual hydrate production capacity has reached 400,000 tons.
“Aluminum is mostly used in the production of automobiles, planes and guns. We export 80 percent of our production. However, our share in the global aluminum market is quite small, 1 percent,” said Tiryakioğlu.
Eti Alüminyum has also won a natural-gas distribution tender. The company currently owns the distribution right for natural gas to Konya’s Seydişehir and Çumra districts for 20 years, Tiryakioğlu said. “The municipality of Seydişehir has a 5 percent partnership,” he added. “We currently have 700 subscribers.”
