MOSCOW--Tajikistan's aluminium smelter, the only primary aluminium producer in Central Asia, increased its output by 2.2% in January-March to 100,420 metric tons, compared with 98,300 tons produced in January-March 2006, the company said Friday.
Output in March was 32,600 tons, 4.5% less than in March 2006.
The smelter is currently experiencing a shortage in electricity supply after state-owned electricity company Barki Tojik cut supply by a third on March 13. The electricity deficit has been caused by shortage of rain affecting hydro electricity generation, as well as by dwindling electricity supplies from the neighboring Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan.
In 2006 the smelter increased its output by 9% on the year to 413,800 tons.
The smelter exports over 60% of its output to the Netherlands.
