MOSCOW--The Tajikistan aluminum smelter may have to cut its primary aluminum output by as much as one third because of electricity deficit in the country, the smelter's press service announced Tuesday.
The national electricity company Barki Tojik cut electricity supply to the smelter by a third as of Tuesday as the country's main electricity producer, the Nurek hydro-electric power station, is working at a quarter of its capacity because of a water shortage.
In addition, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan are supplying half of the electricity they supplied last year.
The smelter originally planned to produce about 418,000 metric tons of primary aluminum this year, but now the figure may have to be cut.
Negotiations are under way with Uzbekistan to obtain extra electricity supplies until mid-April, when melting snow in the mountains will replenish water supplies at the Nurek power station.
