Brazil's CVRD reported record 2006 production of bauxite from its Trombetas mine. At 7.100 million tonnes it was up by 3.1% on 2005's 6.884 million tonnes.
Production of alumina at the Alunorte joint venture refinery in Brazil—CVRD holds a 57% interest--also came in at a new record of 3.939 million tonnes, up 53.2% on 2005's 2.570 million.
That was a result of a record ramp-up of stages 4 and 5 at the plant, which boosted capacity by 1.8 million tpy to 4.4 million tpy over the course of Q1 to Q3 last year. A further hike in Alunorte's capacity to 6.5 million tpy is due next year.
CVRD's primary metal production rose to 550,000t last year from 538,000t in 2005. These figures are pro rata, reflecting the Q3 2006 purchase of the small Valesul smelter. It recorded production of 94,000t, steady on the 93,000t achieved in 2005.
Production at the bigger Albras smelter rose by 2.2% to 456,000t thanks to operational improvements, CVRD said.
