ABU DHABI, Oct 23 Asia Pulse - Work is progressing steadily and well in building the Abu Dhabi aluminium smelter, owned by the Abu Dhabi Aluminum company, and production is set to start by 2011, a senior Abu Dhabi government official said.
"Construction work in the Abu Dhabi aluminium and alumina is speeding up to be ready for production by 2011. The facility will be the world's largest smelter when completed,''said Sheikh Hamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, chairman of the Department of Planning and Economy and chairman of the General Holding Corporation (GHC).
Sheikh Hamed, who made his remarks as he presided over the first meeting of the company, indicated that the creation of the giant firm would contribute in training national manpower and sharpen their skills in par with international standards.
The government of Abu Dhabi has expressed his strong support for General Holding Corporation (GHC) and Rio Tinto to develop a world-class, integrated aluminum facility in Abu Dhabi.
The GHC- Rio Tinto Aluminum alliance was formed earlier this year by Sheikh Hamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Sandeep Biswas, Managing Director, Rio Tinto Aluminum.
"The alliance is of tremendous importance to Abu Dhabi, bringing together the expertise and natural gas resources from the UAE and raw materials, international systems and operational expertise of Rio Tinto," said Sheikh Hamed.
The Abu Dhabi Aluminum company will create thousands of jobs.
The world-class facility will be built near the township of Ruwais in Abu Dhabi.
The aluminum smelter could be expanded over time to produce up to two million tonnes of aluminum, making it the largest smelter in the world.
