Japan urges United States to eliminate extra tariffs on aluminium and steel

   On 4th October 2021, the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry stated that Minister Koichi Hagiuda has urged the United States to eliminate extra tariffs on aluminium and steel products imports from Japan in a meeting with Washington's trade representative.

  The Ministry said: “On a virtual meeting with United States Trade Representative (USTR) Katherine Tai, Hagiuda requested for a resolution to the tariffs issue on Japanese aluminium and steel products under Section 232 of the US Trade Expansion Act.”
  Hagiuda’s plea comes following the US and the EU concluded a three-year-old discord on 31st October 2021 over aluminium and steel tariffs and declared they would work on a global disposition to counter high carbon emitted production and overcapacity in the industry.

  The deal undertakes US to permit EU countries duty-free access for aluminium and steel exports to the United States in volumes comparable to those shipped before tariffs imposed by former U.S. President Donald Trump's administration in 2018.
  Hiroyuki Hatada, Director of Americas division at METI said: “Japan has been asking the United States since 2018 to resolve the issue of additional tariffs on Japanese steel and aluminium products, by abolishing them or other measures.”
  Outlook for the Indian Aluminium Industry
  "We will seek a resolution in a way that is consistent with WTO rules," he added.
