More than seven months after it shut down its alumina refinery at Lanjigarh due to raw material shortage, Vedanta Aluminium Limited (VAL) on Thursday said it started the process of reopening the unit by switching on its captive power plant.
"We have started the power plant to heat up the refinery," said VAL chief operating officer Mukesh Kumar. "We intend to initially run the plant at 60% and gradually stabilize the system," he added.
Company sources said the machines at the refinery were jammed as it had been closed since December 5 and engineers successfully restarted it. VAL has procured one lakh tonne bauxite from Gujarat and after receiving more raw material it will restart the plant soon, sources added.
The plant's closure has impacted the livelihood of more than 30,000 people, company sources added.
