The government of India is working on a mission plan including a technology roadmap to give a fillip to the aluminum industry. This would aid in evolving a national policy for a sustained growth of the Indian aluminum sector and also make it globally competitive.
Mr Vishwapati Trivedi ministry of mines secretary said at the sixth International Conference on Aluminum 2011 in Hyderabad that the Union ministry is now deliberating with stakeholders on this. It would look at ways to enhance the per capita consumption of aluminum in India and exploit natural resources like bauxite and coal.
The per capita consumption of aluminum in India is 1.8 kilogram compared to USA’s 22.3 kilogram, Japan’s 27.6 kilogram, Germany’s 38.2 kilogram and China’s 16 kilogram.
The technology roadmap, needed to reduce the power consumption, reduce the emissions by 25% and reduce the cost of production was being prepared by the department of science and technology jointly with the Aluminum Association of India.
Mr D Bhattacharya president of AAI and MD of Hindalco Industries said that Indian aluminum industry was at an inflection point in the back drop of production costs going up in the west.
India, when compared with US and Brazil is growing fast in the aluminum segment. Indian industry is ahead of global average growth rate expected to be 6.7% between 2010 and 2016.
